My latest painting of a cemetery gate is, to many people, a morose subject. I don’t see it that way. What I see is the art and the design of human beings that want to honor the passing of loved ones.
Years ago, when I first tried drawing a face from imagination, it was a total failure. It always looked flat and lifeless, as opposed to the portraits I did from a photograph. When I held them up side by side the reason was obvious. The drawing from imagination lacked a certain kind to information.
One of the mythical creatures that doesn’t get much mention at Halloween is the ‘Faerie’. Though faeries are a popular costume and one is a co-lead in a very popular movie, they aren’t the first mention when Halloween comes around. Faeries are the Halloween concept art subject this time. (more…)
This is a pet peeve of mine. When someone wants you to do a portrait for them and you tell them that you need a large, close up, clear photo but they give you a 2.5 inch by 3.5 inch blurry photo. I need detail. So what I end up doing is getting it from similar reference material and incorporate it into the painting. This is how I’m adding detail to paintings where none exist. (more…)
